Got a long and lazy evening of binge watching ahead of you? Don’t know what to watch? Why not revisit to one of the indisputable classics of TV – Seinfeld.
2018 marks 20 years since the show left the airwaves, so it’s as good a time as any to catch up. Whether you’re new to the show or are intimately familiar with each and every episode, the smart humour of Seinfeld still stands up and is guaranteed to leave you laughing every time.
How a “Show About Nothing” Changed TV
Created in 1989 by comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, Seinfeld follows the ups and downs in the lives of Jerry and his three – for want of a better word – friends. This endlessly quotable sitcom created many classic TV moments that are still referenced to this day, such as “yada yada yada”, “no soup for you” or “re-gifting.”
The series enjoyed massive popularity and great critical success, and soon cemented its place in the pantheon of iconic TV shows. In 2002, it was voted as the best show of all time by TV Guide readers and ranked fifth in a list of the 100 Greatest TV Shows of All Time by Rolling Stone.
Without Seinfeld, we would not have many of today’s most loved comedies. Over the course of its 180 episodes the show revolutionised what it meant to be a sitcom. Even today, Seinfeld has stayed shockingly relevant with its meandering plots and “no hugging no learning ethos.” Its ground-breaking influence can still be felt in a whole new generation of sitcoms such as Atlanta, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and 30 Rock.
