Notable Characters Created
+ King Ballizar of Tabithia
King Ballizar suffers from something his doctors can only describe as “fevers.” This malady make him very hot and raging. Unless a way can be found to relieve him of these fits of fever, the doctors fear for his life. He gained the throne at age 32. He has been on the throne for six years when Syrenya arrives at the keep.
King Ballizar’s queen, comes to Tabithia with the intent of saving the king. Her age, indeed anything of her history, is unknown. She is able to assuage the king’s fevers somewhat, and she has learned the reason for them, but she is determined that no one at his court ever understands exactly what that reason is. Syrenya grew up in a land where clothing did not exist, and she cannot bring herself to wear the “mightily difficult” robes called for in her role as queen. Thus the title!
+Darien, their adopted son and Crown Prince
Darien grew up in the Royal Nursery, but Queen Syrenya adopts him at age ten, and puts him in line for the throne. He considers himself one of the luckiest orphans alive. But he soon learns the secret Syrenya keeps, and the two fight enemies both without and within the kingdom, to protect and preserve the monarchy. Darien grows from age ten to age thirty-seven over the course of the novel. He marries, has children, and ultimately must assume the crown. That’s the problem!
