The year is 2019 and plenty of things have changed over the years. People are now more vocal about equality and silence is not an option anymore. Gender equality, more so, has been a great issue that many still argue about. Although the early years portrayed a huge disadvantage for women, it’s slowly being altered. This is all thanks to the millions of courageous women (and men) who fight for gender equality. A lot of platforms also help the cause, including films.
Marvel isn’t the first to introduce the idea of feminism in films. However, for a huge and well-known enterprise, it’s a huge help to the cause. With the release of their new movie ‘Captain Marvel’, they have paved an entertaining way to celebrate the rise of modern feminism.
Who Is Captain Marvel?
‘Captain Marvel’ is the story of Carol Danvers, a human who inherited superhuman abilities after an incident that fused her DNA with alien DNA. Like many superheroes we’ve encountered, the majority of which are men, she fights for justice. She does it with utmost bravado and a whole load of badass combat abilities.
In the comics, she was first introduced as Miss Marvel. However, Danvers, later on, dropped the gender-specific ‘miss’ and ultimately turned it to ‘captain’. Presumably, this signifies her taking over the title from her mentor from whom she received her powers. In addition, despite the fact that most female superheroes don skimpy outfits, Captain Marvel dropped her iconic look of a swimsuit-looking costume with thigh highs. She changed it to something more fully equipped: a full body suit, preferably keeping the iconic logo of a star, and adding a touch of her “pilot days” with a full face helmet.
These are small details that mean big to a lot of people, especially in this generation. This could be a great marketing strategy for Marvel. Of course, it also gives the right vibes that many people find pleasing.
Starring Brie Larson in the titular role, the latest film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will premiere on March 8, 2019. The film will also star a lot of popular actors and actresses. These include Samuel L. Jackson (as Nick Fury), Jude Law (as Yon-Rogg), Gemma Chan (as Doctor Minerva), Anette Bening (as Mar-Vell), Clark Gregg (as Phil Coulson), Lashana Lynch (as Maria Rambeau), and a whole lot more!
This first female-led superhero film is definitely a must-watch, regardless if you are a feminist or not. As long as you are a fan of Larson, of the comics, or of Marvel, you can add this to your watch list.
