Disney is on a roll nowadays with its live-action renditions of its highly popular 90s classic animation films. We had Cinderella (2015), Beauty and the Beast (2017), The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018), and Christopher Robin (2018). This year, Disney also released Aladdin and The Lion King. Disney won’t stop there when it comes to their live-action films though. Earlier this year, there were rumors that Disney is already looking for the perfect Mulan (Mulan) and Ariel (The Little Mermaid). However, it seems that the search is over for Ariel! Disney has just announced today, on Fourth of July, that they are casting Halle Bailey of Chloe x Halle in the role.

Halle Bailey on the Role of Ariel

Halle wasn’t the only one considered for the role. Director Rob Marshall, the director is at the helm of this live-action reboot, has met up with a couple of artists to find the right one these past few months. In the end, as the clear front runner of this particular casting call, Halle successfully bagged the role.

With regards to Halle’s casting, Director Marshall has the following words to say:

After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.

The original Disney hit, “The Little Mermaid”, followed the classical fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen. This tale is all about the mermaid princess Ariel who has a fascination with life on land. With her rebellious streak, she often takes a peak above the sea against the wishes of her father, eventually saving and falling in love with a human prince. Her adventures and mishaps commence when she makes a deal with a sea witch to gain the legs she can use to run on land.

The live-action remake will follow the original as closely as possible. In addition, it will also incorporate the original hits from the 1989 animated classic as well as new tunes. Alan Menken sits on the composer’s chair to produce original songs for the remake together with Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Production is set to begin in early 2020. Bailey will be joining the cast together with Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina. Disney is eyeing Melissa McCarthy to play the role of the sea witch Ursula and negotiations are currently underway.
