Dev Patel was only 18 years old when he starred in the hit film Slumdog Millionaire. Danny Boyle was the director of the hit film and wasn’t expecting a huge clamor over it. The film proceeded to win numerous awards including an Academy Award for Best Picture, an Academy Award for Best Original Music Score, an Academy Award for Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, a BAFTA Award for Best Film, and so much more.
The excitement was real for everyone around the world and whispers of positivity were rampant even in India itself. Despite its huge success, Dev Patel remained humble in all of this. It could be the fact that he was merely 18 by that time. It may also be because he had a good head on his shoulder. Interviewers would remember a young man back then whose favorite word was “Wicked!” and whose giddy persona would charm an audience.
Rise to Fame
Slumdog Millionaire was Patel’s big break and it skyrocketed it him to fame. Back then, no one knew a certain Dev Patel but now, the world celebrated him for his performance. Not an easy feat for an 18-year-old, I must say. Now at 28 years old, the British man has graced the film industry with plenty of heartwarming movies, as well as gritty ones. He’s starred in the Last Airbender as Zuko, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel as Sonny Kapoor – a role he also reprised in the second installment of the movie, The Man Who Knew Infinity as Srinivasa Ramanujan, Lion as Saroo Brierley, and lately in The Wedding Guest as Jay. The films that Patel have starred in vary in genre but he always has that unique feel to him.
For some of you, Dev Patel might only be that boy in that super famous movie where he plays an Indian boy named Jamal Malik, but for most of us, he might just be that man whose talents have taken him higher.
