Dev Patel has a hot and heavy film coming in a few days. The Wedding Guest will showcase the actor’s talents once again as he races through Pakistan and India in an action-imbued plot. If you can’t remember, Dev Patel was that gangly guy who played the role of Jamal Malik in the Slumdog Millionaire movie, a film adapted from the novel Q&A by Indian author Vikas Swarup.
Speaking of which, a lot of people have had the same questions asked over the years. Was Slumdog Millionaire based off on true events?
To answer that, you’d have to familiarize yourself with the original novel, Q&A, with which the movie was adapted from. Unfortunately, Q&A by Vikas Swarup does not fall under the real-life adaptation category. Rather, a real person and real-life events “inspired” this novel.
The novel follows the story of a young man named Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old from the slums of Mumbai. Here, he’s a contestant on India’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire who ends up winning the grand prize. For someone who grew up in the slums, he was unexpectedly able to answer all the questions correctly. To a lot of people, it would seem like he was cheating. The story also includes the police interrogating him and asking him how he acquired such knowledge. He then tells them how, leaving everyone in awe.
Slumdog Millionaire won a lot of awards in the industry and it skyrocketed Patel to ultimate stardom. Dev Patel was just 18 years old at that time but he was able to portray the role so well.
Although the novel is a work of fiction, it is still loosely based on the story of the real “Slumdog Millionaire”, Sushil Kumar. Sushil Kumar won the top prize of 50 million Rupees ($1 million) but remained humble and grounded right after that. As he said, “I’m the same Sushil Kumar, before I won and I want to remain the same Sushil Kumar in the future.”
