You know you are an adventurer if you aren’t afraid to click on a movie in Netflix that you have no idea what it’s about, you don’t look at the description, and the positive remarks. You are unaware of what you are watching that you even forget the name of the movie mid-streaming. These are just some of the dirty habits that movie addicts do. And let me tell you, I have found some hidden treasures.
1. The Feels
Homophobics, you should stay away from this movie because this movie is about Andi and Lu, a lesbian couple and all their ups and down while spending a weekend bachelorette party somewhere completely isolated. On the verge of being wedded, a nervous breakdown comes through when one confesses that she hasn’t experienced what it’s like to feel an orgasm.
There were a lot of ‘cringe’ moments in the movie. There were back stories in the movie that weren’t entirely explained: like both supporting characters just began kissing in one scene and we totally did not know there was a chemistry between them, and then I was like what?
Also, one thing that made me laugh was this girl “Karin Tatoyan” in the movie whose singing that I didn’t fancy. I totally questioned whether they were serious or joking when the candid shots and cinematography was paired with her singing. I apologize for the tea.
But even if I kind of found the other roles weird and funny. I like Andi and Lu’s romance. Their struggles as a couple are relatable and seeing them try to resolve the problem is very sweet. I caught myself smiling at the end of the movie.
2. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
The story revolves around the life of Walter Mitty, the Negative Asset Manager of Life Magazine. His career is challenged and in turmoil as he is obliged to find a picture from his partner, Sean O’ Connel that will be the cover of the final magazine that will be released from the company.
The cinematography is amazing. I admire particular scenes in the movie where Walter begins to space out, that really made the movie stand out. Basically, it’s so satisfying to watch. I also love beaten-up characters getting their moment of victory and the ending of the movie totally served that.
3. Stepford Wives
Independent woman, Joanna Eberhart got fired from her job as a TV channel executive. She and her family start to relocate and make a new life in the suburbs in Stepford. Her husband has an easy time settling in but Joanna smells something fishy about the place.
After watching a lot of movies with twisted endings, I kind of predicted how the movie is going to end, but not entirely. The movie injected a lot of humor just to compensate for the true message of the movie. Women are tied down by men just to be objectified and consumed. But the movie is creative enough to let that as the message of the movie. Also, one message that defeats the other one that I mentioned is, don’t cheat on your partner. They can really do wicked things because of anger.
4. Metro Manila
Oscar, a family man who wants to give a better life for his loved ones by making the decision to leave his farming job to live in the big city of Manila. Some major setbacks that the family face as Oscar’s new job threatens his life.
Some of you might be ignoring this film because its setting is not the usual films that you like. But the story of struggle and the love of family is the reason why you shouldn’t ignore this film. There are so many thoughts that go into your head of what happens if we had it as harder like theirs. The value of empathy is activated while watching this movie.
I know a lot of friends who see the Philippines as a great vacation spot. Well, it is true that it has the best tourist destinations to offer but just knowing the culture and the situation of the people there really makes you appreciate the country as a whole.
5. Queen of Katwe
Phiona Matesi, a Ugandan Girl, drastically change her life living in the slums into becoming the best chess player of her time.
Just the depiction of Phiona’s life in the slums of Katwe is heart-wrenching. It is said that there are no laws in the country. Prostitution, robbery, and murder are prevalent in everyday life. The stench dominates the air and flies are everywhere. The story of Phiona’s victory as a chess champion is just one of my favorite rags to riches type of movies.
There are some facts that aren’t shown in the movie but this link will guide you to some of our answered questions.
