The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is an inspiring real-life story of William Kamkwamba, a Malawian innovator, engineer, and author. His thirst for education leads him to pursue his dreams despite living in a village struck with famine. As a young man, Kamkwamba is already capable enough to invent a wind turbine, which then goes on to power the electronic appliances in his family’s home. His brilliance and hard work earned him a scholarship to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Once he was there, he studied hard, eventually graduating with a master’s degree. Later on, he would write a book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. The book he wrote is the inspiration behind the film of the same name.

Chiwetel Ejiofor directs this film. In fact, this would be his debut as director and writer. The movie’s plot follows the book closely, which means a lot considering that the essence remains.

How it Goes

Chiwetel Ejiofor himself plays Trywell Kamkwamba. This character is the father of none other than William Kamkwamba who is also being played by Maxwell Simba. Aissa Maiga is Trywell’s wife, Agnes. The acting in this movie is phenomenal. The movie itself is a wonderful adaptation to the real-life hardships of the people in Kasungu, Malawi. Where there is poverty, famine, greedy industrialists, corrupt and violent politicians, exploitative landowners – a bright mind towers it all. Maxwell Simba is an amazing actor and he matches Chiwetel Ejiofor’s abilities and maturity. The cast’s performance has a huge impact on the audience. At that moment where the film starts, you already feel the pain, the ingenuity, and the inspiration that this film exudes.

The movie’s cinematography is just breathtaking. Although it shows how a famine-stricken land would look like, this just adds to the emotion and depth that the story wants to deliver.

Other than Ejiofor and Simba, other cast members include Felix Lemburo, Robert Agengo, Fiskan Makawa, Lily Banda, and Fredrick Lukhere. The film is already set to launch on Netflix this year, as the huge streaming company has just recently acquired rights to it. This remarkable movie about hope, resourcefulness, and ingenuity is a must-watch.
