No, this isn’t racism. What is actually being debated here is not the actual skin color of actor Will Smith who is playing the magical role of the genie in the lamp. Fans are raising their pitchforks at the first look of Disney’s live-action rendition of Aladdin simply because the role of Genie isn’t blue!

As what the classic tale has always portrayed in the animated film, Genie is supposed to have blue skin. In fact, it is Genie’s blue skin that makes him so classic and magical. The blue skin is what makes Genie stand out from the rest of magical beings that grant people’s wish.

Of course, those fans who are quick to criticize the first look of the live-action film were easily pacified when Will Smith himself took to Instagram. He posted the film’s first poster, one where he claims he is in his “human form”. Smith confirms in the post as well that his character will stay true to the original – his character Genie will be blue. He will only be occasionally in the “disguise form”, but the majority of the film will show him with blue skin color and in CGI.

Aside from Will Smith playing the role of the genie in the lamp, the film will also star Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar. Be sure to watch the film as soon as it hits the theaters this coming May 24, 2019.
