My name is Katelyn E McCallum. I was born in 1985, out in Anaheim, California and then my family migrated to Virginia when I was a wee lass of one and a half. I grew up here, went through the educational system within Fairfax County Public Schools, and graduated from George Mason University in 2009 with a B.A. in Photography and a Minor in Art History. My mother was a reading specialist turned Elementary School Principal and my father was a Minister. I am the youngest sibling with one older brother who has two children and an older sister, also with two children. My mother passed away in 2010 and my father has since remarried to a wonderful woman who has three children of her own and four grandchildren.
With my mother being a reading specialist, I grew up in a household where reading and exploring the world of our own minds as well as the world outside our door, was far more important that what the latest craze on television was. Growing up, I was immersed in Dr. Seuss alongside Shakespeare, R.L. Stein alongside Hemingway. My mother was a reading specialist and so we were reading far above our grade school level. One of my earliest memories is sitting on my mother’s lap as she read to me and my older brother. Naturally, the desire to write and create flowed out of me at a young age, and I could almost always be found with a drawing or writing implement in my hand. I started writing poetry in middle school, started journaling in high school, took writing courses in college and now have published my first work. There are still many things to learn as I continue my literary journey, but I am so excited to see what those will be.
I started this journey in writing my first novel, one that is in fact just a part of a larger series, in January of 2018. The entire process from start to finish took nearly exactly nine months. I know in the literary world that is an unheard-of time frame to write, edit, and publish a book, and I am still blown away that I was able to accomplish the start of this project in that time frame. The book series is a Christian Dystopian Fantasy, set nearly two thousand years into our future. The series takes place mainly underground and it is a fantastic journey of humanity and what it means to be human, what we believe in and do not believe in, and the epic struggle between good and evil.
I am hopeful that the overall message of the series is one that will translate easily to readers. Even if it isn’t translated easily, my hope is that the book series takes them on a journey to their own self-discovery. Some themes are easily recognizable, but I also wanted to place some themes within the series that force the readers to think for themselves. This book centers around the epic journey of the main character, Aoire, one that has spanned millennia. It is my hope that readers enjoy going on her journey with her and with her compatriots as they battle against the greatest evil the world had ever know. If you do so choose to purchase the book, know that I wish it blesses you and transports you into another world, even for just a small moment of time.
